Librarian's Corner

Autumn is in full swing and we are gearing up for some of our biggest events and fundraisers of the year! Our Small Works Exhibition Fundraiser kicks off on Friday, November 7 with a gala Opening Reception. Join us for snacks and sips, and enjoy live music from the talented student musicians of Lewis Mills Highschool while you view the show. Meet some of our talented artists and get first pick of artwork. All art is priced at $100, with 30% of sales going to benefit the Library. Original art makes a unique and thoughtful gift; start your holiday shopping – or treat yourself!

On December 6 it’s time for our Library Friends’ Annual Holiday Open House and Craft Sale! Shoppers can enjoy complimentary goodies while they browse our holiday book carts and choose from a wide variety of handmade crafts and goodies. Our Craft Sale features one-of-a-kind handmade gifts including knitwear, pottery, woodwork, papercrafts, ornaments, jewelry, wreaths and more; you’re bound to find something special. And don’t forget to take a chance on some of the fabulous prizes in our Teacup Auction - you do not have to be present for the drawing in order to win.

The Library will be open for extended hours from 4 -7 that evening as part of Harwinton’s Hometown Holiday. We’ll have drop-in crafts for little hands and Letter Writing Station where they can write a letter to give to Santa! The Craft Sale continues through December 24 during normal Library hours. As we look forward to the busy holidays we are deeply grateful for all of the generous and skilled supporters who give their time, their work, and their talent in support of our Library!

The Wide Sargasso Sea
by Jean Rhys

Book Cover

The author brings into light one of fiction’s most fascinating characters: the madwoman in the attic from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. Antoinette Cosway, a sensual and protected young woman who is sold into marriage to the prideful Mr. Rochester. Rhys portrays Cosway amidst a society so driven by hatred, so skewed in its sexual relations, that it can literally drive a woman out of her mind.

Book Discussion - Monday, December 15th @ 6 pm

Taste
by Stanley Tucci

Book Cover

Taste is a reflection on the intersection of food and life, filled with anecdotes about his growing up; preparing for and shooting the foodie films Big Night and Julie & Julia; falling in love over dinner; and teaming up with his wife to create meals for a multitude of children. Each morsel of this gastronomic journey through good times and bad, five-star meals and burned dishes, is as heartfelt and delicious as the last.
