SUMMARY:Afternoon Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This month’s selection is The Great Divide by Cristina Henriquez. A powerful novel about the construction of the Panama Canal\, casting light on the unsung people who lived\, loved\, and labored there \nIt is said that the canal will be the greatest feat of engineering in history. But first\, it must be built. For Francisco\, a local fisherman who resents the foreign powers clamoring for a slice of his country\, nothing is more upsetting than the decision of his son\, Omar\, to work as a digger in the excavation zone. But for Omar\, whose upbringing was quiet and lonely\, this job offers a chance to finally find connection. \nAda Bunting is a bold sixteen-year-old from Barbados who arrives in Panama as a stowaway alongside thousands of other West Indians seeking work. Alone and with no resources\, she is determined to find a job that will earn enough money for her ailing sister’s surgery. When she sees a young man–Omar–who has collapsed after a grueling shift\, she is the only one who rushes to his aid. \nJohn Oswald has dedicated his life to scientific research and has journeyed to Panama in single-minded pursuit of one goal: eliminating malaria. But now\, his wife\, Marian\, has fallen ill herself\, and when he witnesses Ada’s bravery and compassion\, he hires her on the spot as a caregiver. This fateful decision sets in motion a sweeping tale of ambition\, loyalty\, and sacrifice. \nSearing and empathetic\, The Great Divide explores the intersecting lives of activists\, fishmongers\, laborers\, journalists\, neighbors\, doctors\, and soothsayers–those rarely acknowledged by history even as they carved out its course.

SUMMARY:Evening Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This month’s selection is “Bone Valley: A True Story in Injustice and Redemption in the Heart of Florida: by Gilbert King. In 1987\, Leo Schofield was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife\, Michelle. Always insistent on his innocence\, he was poorly served by his legal defense: the investigation was sloppy\, the case flimsy\, and numerous pieces of evidence were ignored. He was sentenced to life in prison. \nOver thirty years later\, Gilbert King is tipped off to Leo’s case and is astonished by what he found: layers of corruption\, flawed evidence\, and deep-seated errors. He can’t shake the story and starts to get to know Leo and his family. Leo shows an incomprehensible amount of grace and love about his situation\, which spurs Gilbert even more to tell his story. \nBone Valley is at once a revelatory investigation into a murder\, a chilling portrait of the criminal justice system\, and a uniquely powerful story of grace and redemption.

SUMMARY:Afternoon Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This month’s book selection is Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. \nJoan Goodwin has been obsessed with the stars for as long as she can remember. Thoughtful and reserved\, Joan is content with her life as a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University and as aunt to her precocious niece\, Frances. That is\, until she comes across an advertisement seeking the first women scientists to join NASA’s space shuttle program. Suddenly\, Joan burns to be one of the few people to go to space. \nSelected from a pool of thousands of applicants in the summer of 1980\, Joan begins training at Houston’s Johnson Space Center\, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates: Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond and scientist John Griffin\, who are kind and easygoing even when the stakes are highest; mission specialist Lydia Danes\, who has worked too hard to play nice; warmhearted Donna Fitzgerald\, who is navigating her own secrets; and Vanessa Ford\, the magnetic and mysterious aeronautical engineer\, who can fix any engine and fly any plane. \nAs the new astronauts become unlikely friends and prepare for their first flights\, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined. In this new light\, Joan begins to question everything she thinks she knows about her place in the observable universe. \nThen\, in December of 1984\, on mission STS-LR9\, it all changes in an instant. \nBooks are available to borrow \n
