SUMMARY:Evening Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This month’s selection is: George Washington’s Secret Six: the Spy Ring that Saved the American Revolution by Brian Kilmeade. \nThe American Revolution is well under way in 1776\, but things are looking bleak for General George Washington and his Continental Army. With Washington’s hasty retreat from New York City in August\, many think the war might soon be over. After all- how on earth is this ragtag group going to defeat its enemy\, the well-trained and well-funded military of the largest empire in history? \nBut Washington soon realizes he can’t win with military might. Instead\, he must outsmart the British\, so he creates a sophisticated intelligence network- the top-secret Culper Spy Ring. Drawing on extensive research\, Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger tell the fascinating stories of these long unrecognized spies- a reserved merchant\, a tavern keeper\, a brash young longshoreman\, a curmudgeonly Long Island bachelor\, a coffeehouse owner\, and a mysterious woman.

SUMMARY:Evening Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This month’s selection is The Children of Men by PD James. The Children of Men by P.D. James is a dystopian novel set in a future England (2021) where humanity faces extinction due to universal male sterility\, with the last generation of children now adults. The story follows Oxford historian Theodore Faron\, who lives in apathy until he’s drawn into a revolutionary group by a woman named Julian\, who believes she might be pregnant\, offering a potential hope for humanity’s survival amidst societal collapse\, mass suicides\, and a repressive government led by the Warden of England. The novel explores themes of despair\, faith\, and the meaning of life in the absence of a future\, contrasting the bleak reality with the hope of a new birth. Copies are available to borrow.

SUMMARY:Afternoon Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This month’s selection is The Great Divide by Cristina Henriquez. A powerful novel about the construction of the Panama Canal\, casting light on the unsung people who lived\, loved\, and labored there \nIt is said that the canal will be the greatest feat of engineering in history. But first\, it must be built. For Francisco\, a local fisherman who resents the foreign powers clamoring for a slice of his country\, nothing is more upsetting than the decision of his son\, Omar\, to work as a digger in the excavation zone. But for Omar\, whose upbringing was quiet and lonely\, this job offers a chance to finally find connection. \nAda Bunting is a bold sixteen-year-old from Barbados who arrives in Panama as a stowaway alongside thousands of other West Indians seeking work. Alone and with no resources\, she is determined to find a job that will earn enough money for her ailing sister’s surgery. When she sees a young man–Omar–who has collapsed after a grueling shift\, she is the only one who rushes to his aid. \nJohn Oswald has dedicated his life to scientific research and has journeyed to Panama in single-minded pursuit of one goal: eliminating malaria. But now\, his wife\, Marian\, has fallen ill herself\, and when he witnesses Ada’s bravery and compassion\, he hires her on the spot as a caregiver. This fateful decision sets in motion a sweeping tale of ambition\, loyalty\, and sacrifice. \nSearing and empathetic\, The Great Divide explores the intersecting lives of activists\, fishmongers\, laborers\, journalists\, neighbors\, doctors\, and soothsayers–those rarely acknowledged by history even as they carved out its course.

SUMMARY:Evening Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This month’s selection is “Bone Valley: A True Story in Injustice and Redemption in the Heart of Florida: by Gilbert King. In 1987\, Leo Schofield was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife\, Michelle. Always insistent on his innocence\, he was poorly served by his legal defense: the investigation was sloppy\, the case flimsy\, and numerous pieces of evidence were ignored. He was sentenced to life in prison. \nOver thirty years later\, Gilbert King is tipped off to Leo’s case and is astonished by what he found: layers of corruption\, flawed evidence\, and deep-seated errors. He can’t shake the story and starts to get to know Leo and his family. Leo shows an incomprehensible amount of grace and love about his situation\, which spurs Gilbert even more to tell his story. \nBone Valley is at once a revelatory investigation into a murder\, a chilling portrait of the criminal justice system\, and a uniquely powerful story of grace and redemption.
